English Martyrs' has set itself as one of its priorities for the next year: MISSION. It is essential that as a Parish Community we are creative in how we strengthen our own faith and provide an opportunity for us to evangelise others. The central aspect of this must always be the celebration of the Eucharist on Sunday. However, it is clear that there are few other opportunities apart from Mass during the week, RCIA and Parish Pilgrimages for our community to join together on a regular basis so as to share our faith and be given opportunities as a community to evangelise those who do not attend Sunday Mass. To summarise, the challenges we face are: How do we strengthen each other’s faith? How do we strengthen community?
How do we share our faith with others? The Parish Cell Group provides an ideal answer
to these challenges. Cell groups could be run on the following basis: 6-8 people to meet on a fortnightly or monthly basis in someone’s home. A Cell Group Leader (not necessarily the homeowner) would lead the group, ensuring the agreed programme was followed and that everyone was given an opportunity to participate. The emphasis would be on people sharing their experiences, ‘joys and sorrows’ etc. This would be followed by a period of time set aside for Lectio Divina and then a time of shared prayer. There should also be an emphasis on sharing meals together. Each Cell Group when forming would be encouraged to invite at least one person who did not regularly attend Sunday Mass. An essential characteristic of the Cell Groups would be that they are very much a part of the English Martyrs’ Parish Community and not separate from it. Cell groups should be seen in the context of strengthening the community.
