Lent

A season of soul-searching and repentance, reflection, taking stock, and of preparation for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on Good Friday & Easter Sunday.

Lent consists of a forty-day period (not including Sundays) prior to Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on the evening of Holy Thursday, with the mass of the Lord’s Supper.

Lent lasts for forty days & nights because Jesus spent that amount of time in the desert preparing himself for His ministry of preaching the Gospel.

  • Fasting
    why, what and how?

    • Jesus fasted for forty days & nights to prepare for His ministry.

Fasting is a spiritual discipline, an act of devotion to God, and does not mean that we must starve ourselves of food.  It is a symbolic action, and, provided that it is undertaken for the right motive, can be a very effective means of both showing our sorrow for sin and of reminding ourselves of the suffering of Christ. It is also a good way of acquiring self-control, so necessary in the Christian life.

  • Stations of the Cross

    • The Stations of the Cross are a Catholic custom whereby we process around a series of tableaux or pictures which represent the Passion of Christ. At each “station” we pause to meditate on the particular event it portrays. It is particularly appropriate to pray the Stations of the Cross during the season of Lent. In St Thomas & the English Martyrs' Church, the Stations are located around the walls of the church.
