The Wednesday Word

Spreading the Sunday Gospel to families through primary schools and promoting
a new Family Time custom that enriches the Home, School & Parish partnership

"Go out to the whole world, and proclaim
the good news to all creation
"

Mark 16:15

It is important for us to prepare ourselves prayerfully for the proclamation of the Sunday Gospel.

'The Wednesday Word' will be distributed at Sunday Mass and contains the following Sunday’s Gospel. Parishioners will be able to pray and reflect on that Gospel during the course of the week.

About the Wednesday Word

What parents say about the Wednesday Word

Dedication & Prayer

The Wednesday Word aims to contribute to drawing families more closely into the life of the Church through creating a new form of relationship between the Church and those who do not currently appear to be practising or enquiring about the Catholic faith.

"Where two or three come together in my name,
there I am with them
"
Matt 18:20

The Wednesday Word has been designed to unite our parish communities in prayer with our school families.  Each week the Sunday Gospel is sent out into school family homes. For school parents the arrival of The Wednesday Word into the family home seeks to act as a weekly reminder of the love that our Lord has for them and also of the responsibility that many accepted at Baptism, to bring their children to the knowledge and practice of the Good News that we have received in Jesus.

A deep spiritual communion between parishioners and school families on the same evening each week would help build up the Body of Christ in School and in Church and in the Home. The weekly distribution of the primary school version of The Wednesday Word ensures an unbroken invitation to the Eucharist throughout school life and is a further way for our Church to demonstrate our care and concern for our school families.

We ask that parishioners will pray the adult version of The Wednesday Word, (preferably on a Wednesday) thus creating a powerful Church/School bond.

"Imagine a sower going out to sow.
Some
seeds fell on rich soil and produced their crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
"

Matt 13:3 & 8

WHAT PARENTS HAVE SAID

The comments below are just a small selection of the many positive remarks that have been received from practising and non practising parents who have used The Wednesday Word.

  • I liked the family time together, listening to the children's insights into the Gospel and family life, and having a structure to work on.

  • This is a way to reinforce good values in children; it supports the family well.

  • I enjoyed the togetherness and the way that The Wednesday Word involved non-Catholic members of the family. This was excellent and fun.

  • It prepared the children for Sunday Liturgy with simple and direct messages which can also be expanded on. It was simple to understand, thought provoking, child and adult friendly and teaches us how to pray together as a family.

  • It made us sit down as a family and discuss the Gospel and say how we felt about it. It brought us closer together.

The Wednesday Word Mission is dedicated to St Joseph, Patron saint of Families and Protector of the Church. In the tradition of the Catholic Church each Wednesday is dedicated to him.

Lord, we ask you to bless our parishes
and the many families in our Catholic schools.

Open our eyes to see your glory;
open our ears to hear your call;
open our lips to sing your praise;
guide us on our journey of faith.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

St Joseph, pray for us.
Our Lady, Star of evangelisation, pray for us.
